The Federal Circuit Announces Holiday Closings 2009

By order of the Chief Judge, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit will be closed on Friday, November 27, 2009, Thursday, December 24 and Thursday, December 31, 2009. For purposes of computation of time and motions to enlarge time Under Fed. R. App. P. 26 and Fed. Cir. R. 26, November 27, 2009, Thursday, December 24 and Thursday, December 31, 2009, will be considered “legal holidays.”

Circuit Judge Raymond C. Clevenger III, Circuit Judge Arthur J. Gajarsa and Circuit Judge Sharon Prost will hear an appellate mock argument on November 14th, during the 15th Annual Conference on Intellectual Property Law sponsored by the Intellectual Property Section of the State Bar of Georgia. Chief Judge Michel Selected to be the Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the Fordham Intellectual Property Institute from November 15 to 19, 2009

Chief Judge Paul Michel has been selected to be the Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the Fordham Intellectual Property Institute from November 15 to 19, 2009. As a Fellow, the Chief Judge will participate in many aspects of the law school, including teaching classes and meeting with students. He will also deliver a public lecture, entitled “Innovation Incentives, Competition, and Patent Law Reform: Should Congress Fix the Patent Office and Leave Litigation Management to the Courts?" on November 18, 2009. Chief Judge Michel to Receive IP Person of the Year Award from the LAIPLA on December 1, 2009. Circuit Judge Linn to Join Chief Judge Michel on Panel Discussion about Remedies in IP Litigation.

Chief Judge Paul Michel will receive the IP Person of the Year Award at the LAIPLA Judges' Night 2009 dinner and reception on Tuesday, December 1, 2009. The dinner and reception will be held at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles, California. Circuit Judge Richard Linn will join Chief Judge Michel on a panel discussion about remedies in patent litigation at the dinner. Information is available at this link.

Judges of the Federal Circuit Sitting by Designation for 2007, 2008 and 2009

The Chief Justice assigns circuit judges to sit by designation with another circuit or district court pursuant to 28 U.S.C. § 291. Thus far in 2009, eight judges of the Federal Circuit have sat by designation with other circuits. In the calendar year 2008, four Federal Circuit judges sat by designation with four sister circuits, while one Federal Circuit Judge presided over a trial in a federal district court. Five judges of the Federal Circuit had the opportunity to sit by designation with three sister circuits during calendar year 2007. Lists of the Federal Circuit judges who were assigned to sit by designation are available for 2007, 2008 and 2009.

Visiting Judges Sitting with the Federal Circuit

Since September 2006, forty-two judges from circuit and district courts around the country have sat with the Federal Circuit. A list of the visiting judges who have sat with the court through June 2009 is available here.
