About Intracircuit Assignments

When courts have heavy caseloads or unanticipated personnel needs, an Intracircuit Assignment, or assignment of a federal judge from one jurisdiction to another, can be requested to assist with the timely progression of cases.  Visiting judges help address increased caseloads, while also facilitating the exchange of ideas and practices within the Judiciary.  Intracircuit Assignments are typically requested by the chief judge of a hosting court and are approved by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

In 2024, the Federal Circuit resumed its visiting judge program and has since had 14 judges sit by designation, with plans to host more judges in the future.  A list of past Federal Circuit Intracircuit Assignments is provided below.
